Kauffman Fellows Announces 21st Class

Furthering the mission of bringing smart, connected capital to countries across the world, Kauffman Fellows is excited to launch Class 21, consisting of 45 dynamic top-tier investors from firms in the United States, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Europe. The majority (62 percent) of the new Fellows are partners, managing directors, or CEOs of their firms. The distinguished two-year Kauffman Fellows Program further develops and networks global leaders in the venture capital industry, and is dedicated to promoting diversity: 31 percent of this largest class to date are women, and 11 percent are underrepresented minorities.

Fellows hail from a number of top firms including Upfront Ventures, Pritzker Ventures, Social Capital, Creandum, 5AM, Techstars Fund, Kapor Capital, and Google Ventures.  Mentors for Class 21 Fellows include notable venture capital investors such as Mark Suster, Managing Partner, Upfront Ventures; Fernando Fabre, President, Endeavor Global; Christine Tsai, Founding Partner, 500 Startups; Karen Kerr, Managing Partner, GE Ventures; Mamoon Hamid, Partner, Social Capital; and David Krane, Managing Partner, Google Ventures.

Class 21 Fellows comprise a passionate group of investors and innovators intent on making an impact globally—including the CEO of a nonprofit fostering entrepreneurship in North Korea, the managing director of the University of Chicago’s $7.1 billion endowment, the Young Global Leader for entrepreneurship in Singapore, the cofounder of the Pearson Affordable Learning Fund, and two funders and mentors for Latin American startups.

“Every year, I think we can’t possibly have a stronger class with more potential to change the world – and every year I’m amazed when they raise the bar,” said Kauffman Fellows President Jeff Harbach. “This is a highly motivated, highly energized group that has really hit the ground running. They are one of the most experienced and diverse groups of innovation investors we’ve ever had, and we are thrilled to welcome them as the newest class of Kauffman Fellows.”

Members of the new class join the premiere global investment community—the Kauffman Fellows Society.  More than 470 Fellows have collectively deployed nearly $200 billion in capital and created more than 750 thousand jobs worldwide. Graduates lead venture capital, government, corporate, university, and startup innovation efforts in more than 40 countries. Kauffman Fellows has a strong commitment to diversity and actively recruits women and minorities. Inspired by Ewing Marion Kauffman and his legacy of shared ownership, accountability, and experimentation, we measure success in enduring new businesses that generate long-term returns for principals, investors, and society as a whole.

Each Kauffman Fellows class is selected from a large applicant pool. Candidates are nominated by current Fellows and then sponsored by their venture firms, but applicants may self-nominate. Applicants interested in participating in the 2017 recruiting process should contact Jane Chinen (jchinen@kfp.org).
