
Aly El Shalakany
Aly studied Economics and Political Science at the University of Toronto (Ontario, Canada) and read law at the School of Oriental and African Studies (London, UK). Before switching to VC, Aly was an M&A lawyer for over 15 years practicing in the UK, the Middle East and Africa.
Aly was also the cofounder of the the Cairo Angels, the first angel group to be founded in Africa. Aly is also a Founding Partner and member of the Investment Committee of Saudi Angel Investors, an angel fund that invests in startups in Saudi Arabia.
Aly is also the author of Beyond the Rubicon, a blog that focuses on the intersection of venture capital, business and the economy across the Middle East and Africa.
Aly is currently a Venture Partner with A-typical Ventures, a $40m early-stage venture capital firm in Qatar backed by QIA that invests across the Middle East. Prior to joining A-typical Ventures, Aly was the Managing Director for Egypt and North Africa at 54 Collective, Africa’s most active, hands-on, early-stage venture capital investor. Aly was also the Managing Partner of Acasia Ventures, a venture capital firm that invests in early stage tech and tech enabled startups in the Middle East and Africa.
